This poor widow has put in More than all
In Today’s Gospel, the scribes are presented as ostentatious and devious, acting more out of self-interest than the love of God or people. There can be an element of self-interest in each of us. Perhaps there have been times when you have been disturbed by glimpsing in yourself ‘other motives’ in your doing good. Where was the good news for you in that awakening? In material terms what the widow had to offer was very little. Perhaps you have had the experience of finding that what you thought was little and insignificant meant a great deal to another person. At this critical moment for the church Pope Francis has called a synod and has invited all believers to make a contribution. It’s easy for us to see this as a call to professional church people, clergy and religious. They have always taken care of this kind of thing. Now more than ever, the call is that the voices of the little ones can also be heard. How can you help this to happen in your church community???
During the Month of November, we pray especially for all who have died. We pray that they have passed from death to life in the company of the Lord Jesus, who died and rose to new life. We dedicate the month of November to their memory and commend them to the Love and Mercy of God, Our Father. We also pray for those who mourn the death of a loved one. In our darkest moments, the Risen Christ is among, us to bring new light and hope.
Lord of all gentleness, surround us with your care and comfort us in our sorrow. It is our certain faith that your Son Jesus Christ, who died on the cross was raised from the dead. Grant through this mystery, that all who have gone to their rest in Christ may share in the joy of His Resurrection. We ask this through Christ Our Lord.
Amen
