The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Holy Week, and its events, are not in the past. As a follower of Jesus, and a witness to His Resurrection, we walk the journey of Holy Week through the Cross, to the Resurrection again and again in our lives. It is because of the brutal honesty of those who first walked Holy Week with Jesus; it is because of the courage of Peter, Thomas and all of the others that we know we have nothing to fear in our own Holy Week journey. Yes, we will fail and let ourselves down; and yes, we will feel guilt and shame at times for things we have done or not done, things we have said or not said. The example of Peter’s denials, or Thomas’ doubts, or even Judas’ betrayal, assures us that no matter how dark things feel for us, Jesus is greater, and the light of the Resurrection will always dawn again. As we make our journey through each day of Holy Week – Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, through the last Supper, washing his disciples’ feet, agony in the garden and arrest. Good Friday in the passion, death and burial. Holy Saturday through time to rest with Jesus in the tomb and Easter Sunday, with the Resurrection of Jesus from the Dead. Therefore, let us try to do so as the disciples did, not knowing what came next. In our prayer, our meditation, our contemplation, we can ask Jesus and the others to help us to experience this week as they did – with all the gambit of emotions they endured. Praying through Holy Week is difficult and also emotionally draining if we truly try to experience each day as those present experienced them. However, it is worth the effort!
