Come and find peace in the Lord.
The Holy Spirit will bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
In today’s Gospel, John begins to reveal to us how we come to know the person of Jesus, and what he says is breathtaking. However, it is not just breathtaking; if we can truly hear what John is saying in this Gospel and understand what the ‘glorified’ Jesus is offering us, then our lives change forever. As WB Yeats said in a different context, “All is changed; changed utterly.” Firstly, John assures us that the Jesus who speaks after the Resurrection is the ‘glorified’ Jesus, revealed as God in the supreme act of Love which was the Cross. The ‘glorified’ Jesus no longer speaks in parables and stories. When the ‘glorified’ Jesus speaks, it is now God who speaks. “These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.” We truly need to take time to let these words sink into our hearts. We so easily complain that ‘believing in God’ is difficult because we cannot ‘see‘ God, or ‘hear‘ God, or ‘touch‘ God, but for us, for all Christians, we can see, hear and touch God. In the living person of Jesus, in his words, his actions, his interaction with others, we see, hear, and touch God. Listen again to Jesus say it to us, “These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.” If we could really and truly and absolutely believe this then for us, for our lives, “all is changed; changed utterly.”
PRAYER TO OUR LADY FOR THE MONTH OF MAY
Mary, Mother of Jesus and of all the human family, with great joy we call you Blessed. Be close to us always. May no day pass without a prayer to you in our hearts and on our lips. May you be a mother to us throughout all the years of our lives, a mother ever ready to help us. Stay with us, Mary, when there is peace at home, when joy and happiness make life easy. Stay with us, Mother, whenever we have sickness in the home, it is then we need you most. Should death come to any member of the family, old or young, then comfort us in our grief and wipe away our tears. And, Mary, when we close our eyes in death, may we find you waiting to welcome us at the gates of Heaven.
Amen.
