‘You give them something to eat.’
We have no idea how the miracle of the “Feeding of the 5,000” actually happened. Maybe it was as simple as getting the crowd to share with one another. If so, that would indeed be a miracle, given the values of this world. Maybe it was something else, an intervention by God, a supernatural event, yet another act of love by God. We simply don’t know. What does matter is the challenge Jesus places before them.
At this point, we can ask ourselves, Which Kingdom do we follow: Is it the Kingdom of this world or the Kingdom of God. We cannot do both! The Kingdom of this world offers power, wealth, success to some, and poverty, exclusion and death to others. It is a transient Kingdom, shaped by people; a Kingdom which passes and fades. The Kingdom of God is based on the person of Jesus. We have his life, death and resurrection as a guarantee that it is a Kingdom that triumphs We also have Pentecost – the Holy Spirit who lives within us, making a “home with us”, and we have the words of St. Paul that the Spirit brings us “joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” All we need is the courage to trust in Jesus and in the Kingdom of God…
