‘Who is my neighbour?’
In today’s gospel, instead of debating ‘who is my neighbour’ we are called ‘to become a neighbour’ to anyone on our path, even those whom we might think are unworthy of our compassion. The Parable does not let us narrow the field of who we should love. It demands that we widen the field to include those we would otherwise overlook, especially those who are defenceless, weak, and subject to the exploitation of others. For a Christian, there can be no walls or barriers or chains that divide us. We don’t get lost in confrontations and arguments, which can only divide us. The Scribe in today’s Gospel tried to force Jesus to build walls – to say that X is my neighbour, and worthy of my love, whereas Y is not my neighbour, and therefore not worthy of my love. Jesus refuses to even entertain such divisions. Everyone is my neighbour. As Christians, as baptised followers of Jesus in our world, we must be honest with ourselves and open to the challenge of espousing Kingdom of God values in a world which more and more rejects them. Rather than asking, “Who is my neighbour?” Jesus says we should be asking, “Am I being a neighbour?” Well, am I? … And do I dare answer… and change …or not ?
