‘Martha welcomed him. Mary has chosen the good portion.’
As we see Mary and Martha in today’s Gospel, it could be said that all of us constantly journey between the Martha within us, and the Mary within us – and both are present. However, Contemplation as we know it to be, sitting at the feet of Jesus and listening to Him is meaningless if it does not result in Mission. No true follower of Jesus can remain unaware of where and with whom we live. Our contemplation must send us out to serve and take care of our environment, our planet, those who suffer and are forgotten, all the people of the world, all of those with whom we share our home. Mission is meaningless if it does not spring from thought, reflection and prayer. Mission without reflection becomes self-serving and selfish. It inevitably results in unhappiness, emptiness and loneliness. Jesus said, “Come to me…and I will give you rest” but he also said, “Go now, and make disciples of all nation.”
