‘Ask, and It will be Given to You.’
Often we forget that Jesus, just like us, needed to pray to stay in touch with His Father. We think that he had some kind of ‘direct link’ with God & knew what he had to do automatically. Yet the Gospels make it abundantly clear that prayer was at the core of his mission. Before all of his major decisions, we see that he prayed. Our journey to God must follow the same pathway. We must look at our God, not with fear, but with the respect we might give our own parents when we were young. We recognise in God and in Jesus a ‘friend’ who seeks to have an intimate, personal relationship with us. Prayer is about developing a real, personal, relationship with Jesus. This is the message that screams at us from this Gospel. God is ‘Abba’ (Father), and our relationship with this God is one of friendship. A true friend will always do what is best for us, and never do what would harm us. Looking at this week’s Gospel and listening to what people of deep prayer tell us, we notice the same words arising again and again: ‘intimate’; ‘friend’; ‘personal’; ‘relationship’; ‘Abba’ (Father). The extraordinary thing in this Gospel is that Jesus is not only sharing with us his prayer and his relationship with the Father (Abba), but he is inviting each one of us to have the same relationship with the Father as he has. It is mindboggling, extraordinary, overwhelming, astonishing and any other superlative you care to add. It is also true!!
