The Things You Have Prepared, Whose Will They Be?
All around our world we see the results of greed, selfishness, power, ambition, domination and there is little happiness. There is no happiness in Gaza or in Israel, in Ukraine, or Syria or the Sudan or Myanmar or Ethiopia. Sadly the list is endless! In our own lives, there is no real happiness in refusing to say sorry, holding grudges, being jealous, lording it over others, boasting of our achievements, or hoarding more and more possessions and trophies of things that glitter in the glare of our camera flashes. In Today’s Gospel, the man in the parable was missing the ability to see and enjoy all of his work and success as a blessing from God. If he had seen all he achieved as being part of God’s wonderful creation then his work and effort, his success, even his enjoyment of that success would have been a sharing in God’s own delight in creation. His work and success would have had an eternal value. The man in the Parable is not a bad man or a sinful man. Jesus calls him a “Fool”, and he is a fool because he gained so much by his hard work, yet missed the ability to recognise it as part of something much more wonder-full. Through self awareness, everything we do becomes part of God’s own wonder at creation and his enjoyment of it. It is really the same as the words of Saint Augustine tell us: “Our hearts are made for you, Oh Lord, and they will not rest until they rest in you.”
