Anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciples
Looking around our world, we must see that the call to be disciples of Jesus has never been greater or more urgent. We are called to stand for justice, peace and tolerance even if what we have to say is uncomfortable and makes us unpopular. In ‘carrying our crosses’ we move away from fear and anxiety, trusting in the Resurrection of Jesus and the power of the Spirit given to us at Pentecost. In ‘giving up everything we have’ we put aside hypocrisy, making sure our actions match our words so that we can be true witnesses to joy and hope in our world. To be a true ‘disciple of Jesus’ is not a decision we can take lightly. Once made, our lives must change, with the Kingdom of God and all of its values becoming our priority. Once made, we accept that standing for the Kingdom of God means challenging the values of the kingdoms of this world, accepting the crosses this will inevitably bring. Once made, we put aside pride, vanity and hypocrisy, determining to live genuine and authentic lives as witnesses to the Resurrection. None of this is easy. In fact, it is extraordinarily difficult, which is why Jesus urges us to take our time, weighing up the implications of discipleship for our lives. This Gospel places before us the very real cost of calling ourselves Christians and urges us to stop, reflect, weigh-up whether we can be, or even want to be, disciples of Jesus. It is a journey each of us must make alone, in the silence of our hearts, in prayer. It is a journey that begins and ends at the empty tomb on Easter Sunday morning. “Do not be afraid. You seek Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here; see the place where they laid him.” (Mark 16:6)

The theme for the Season of Creation 2025, which runs from September 1st to October 4th, is peace with creation. Our hope: Creation will find peace when justice is restored. There is still hope and the expectation for a peaceful Earth. To hope does not mean to stand still and quiet, but to act, pray, change, and reconcile with Creation and the Creator in unity, repentance and solidarity.

The Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes begins on Tuesday, September 9th. Each year this pilgrimage is a source of grace and encouragement for our diocese, and it gathers together many groups who make up the life of our Church. Among those travelling are pilgrims carrying sickness, volunteer helpers who give generously of their time, young people bringing great energy and faith, and the Cathedral Choristers who lift hearts in prayer through their music. Lourdes is a very special place where prayer, reflection, and healing are at the heart of the experience. It is a shrine of welcome and peace, where the sick are held in honour and where many find new strength and consolation. As our diocesan family travels there once again, we remember them warmly in our prayers, and we ask them in turn to carry our intentions to the Grotto of Our Lady.
