‘Jesus went to Capernaum so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled.’
This week’s Gospel opens to us the mind and heart of Jesus as he began his ministry among us. The words he spoke were the result of thirty years prayer, reflection and coming to know God. They were spoken with a conviction and passion that even suffering and death could not stop. They were not the words of a delusional man. They were spoken by a man of gentleness and compassion; a man of wisdom and understanding; and a man of truth and forgiveness. We live in a world where our leaders make wonderful promises to ease debt, eliminate poverty and homelessness, improve health care, work for justice and fairness for all, support those who have nothing, welcome the persecuted. And no sooner are these things said than we have ‘U turns’, ‘changes.’ In this Gospel Jesus says what he says at the beginning of his mission among us. They represent both his promises to us and his conviction that the things he says are true. Never once during his life, including his suffering and horrible death; never once when he was tired or under pressure; never once when his enemies laid traps for him; never once did he waver in the slightest way from what he promised us. Now here is someone we can believe!!
