‘His face shone like the sun.’
The transfiguration took place at a very significant moment in Jesus ministry. After teaching for some time, He was aware of the opposition he faced from some of the Pharisees. This would have been a time of doubt and fear for Jesus. It was a period when he would have wondered about the coming Messiah and he may well have begun to see himself in some way linked with this Messiah.
The experience of Jesus on the mountain of the Transfiguration came at a time when Jesus badly needed to be reassured by God that he was doing the right thing. When he came down from the mountain Luke’s Gospel tells us that he ‘set his face for Jerusalem’, knowing that he almost certainly faced his own death but now reassured that God was truly with him. Isn’t it good to know that Jesus, just like us, had moments of fear and doubt; moments when he needed to hear God say to him, You are my own dear Son.It happened at his Baptism as he set out on his journey, and here, it happened again as he neared the climax of his mission. And isn’t it also good to know that our wonderful, personal God is always there, ready to reassure us that he is walking with us as we join him in making God’s Kingdom visible in our world. In prayer, in listening to his Word, in liturgy, in Sacrament, in creation, in each person made in God’s image and likeness, God speaks to us every day. In our lives all of us may be gifted with ‘moments of God’ … or not. They will come, as God’s gift, if and when we need to be reassured of God’s nearness to us. We cannot just sit back and expect God to speak to us. We are active partners with the Risen Lord in bringing about the reign of God on earth, and it is only in that partnership that we will hear God speak to us. Agony and ecstasy are different sides of the same coin. It is in both, if we are attentive, that God will come to us most powerfully.

Please pray for Mary Dunne, Mountrath; recently deceased.  R.I.P.
