He went and washed and received His Sight.
Today’s Gospel is a timely warning for us. We do live in confusing and uncertain times, just as Jesus did. Rebellion against Rome and the horror and destruction that would bring upon Israel, was as real for Jesus as is Iran, the horrors of endlessly increasing prices and the uncertainty of where it will end are for us. As Christians our challenge is twofold; one, to grow in our own conviction that Jesus is “the light of the world” and that “the darkness will never overcome it” and to be witnesses in our world to the light, and to refuse to allow ourselves to be seduced by darkness. Without doubt, the latter is the greatest challenge. Last week, we saw the comfort and security felt by Jesus while sitting with a Samaritan woman at the well in a Samaritan town. This week, that same comfort and inner certainty is extended to his dealings with the most powerful of Jewish leadership, the Pharisees. As Jesus neared Jerusalem and the awful events of Holy Week, we see Jesus become calmer and more certain of himself. As his journey in life drew to an end, his journey in self-understanding became ever stronger. He was more and more convinced that he was “the light of the world” and that the Kingdom of God was becoming visible to the world through him, and in him. In just a few weeks, on Good Friday, the Cross of his death and final humiliation as far as the Kingdoms of this world are concerned, become the moment when the Kingdom of God is revealed, when light vanquishes darkness, life vanquishes death, love vanquishes hate, and hope vanquishes fear. As Christians, this is now our journey, our victory and our hope.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
