As the Father sent Me, so am I sending you: Receive the Holy Spirit.
This week’s Gospel reading provides for us the foundations for the Pentecost experience. At its heart “receiving the Holy Spirit” must be an experience of “peace” and of “forgiveness”. Saint Paul says it very well in his first letter to the Corinthians, “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.” It is the Gospel which gives us the tools to judge whether experiences of the Holy Spirit are authentic and real. The boundless joy and the power of Pentecost for the Apostles and disciples of Jesus was founded on the Cross, their desolate experience of losing Jesus, and the initial confusion surrounding his Resurrection. For all of those present, the Pentecost experience was a confirmation of everything Jesus had told them. It confirmed that their faith in Jesus was justified; it confirmed that he was the Messiah; it confirmed that he Rose from the dead; it confirmed that his message of peace and forgiveness could unite people, whoever and wherever they were. Pope Francis in ‘The Joy of the Gospel‘ writes: If we wish to be evangelizers and apostles of the Risen Jesus, we must foster within ourselves “certain attitudes which foster openness to the message: approachability, readiness for dialogue, patience, a warmth and welcome which is non-judgmental.” Enthusiasm and serenity, peace and passion, patience and eagerness, mighty wind and gentle breeze, raging fire and warmth of home, proclaiming and listening, Cross and Resurrection, are all different faces of Pentecost. Indeed it is the Holy Spirit, dwelling within us, who leads us to embrace all of these things – if we let it of course…
