‘You have hidden these things from the wise and revealed them to little children.’
It is well worth asking ourselves, what qualities do children have which make them worthy exemplars of God’s Kingdom? Trust has to be number one on any list. Every child is born trusting and innocent. With trust comes freedom; the freedom to explore, be surprised, be awed, find joy and wonder in the simplest of things. A child can find an entire universe of joy in a rock pool, or a cardboard box. When Jesus holds a child before us he is challenging us to look again at all we have been taught by the world. We so easily believe that ‘wisdom’ is attained in degrees, diplomas and as many letters after my name as I can legitimately squeeze in! This leads only to a kind of intellectual snobbery where ‘only what I understand is real or important‘. The child challenges us to relearn how to trust, because when we trust we find freedom, wonder, joy and the confidence to be ourselves before the world and our God. The Kingdom of God is not for those who are lost in their own tiny worlds; those who are prisoners to egotism, arrogance and self-importance. The Kingdom of God, when it is fully revealed, will be for those who have learned to trust; those with the freedom to see beyond themselves to the universe of surprise, endless wonder and real joy. This is what God wants for us. It is what God says to us in this Gospel, and it is truly wonder-full. Once we have learned to trust the person of Jesus we can, as he tells us himself, “enjoy the freedom of the children of God.” and with that freedom comes our ability to hear and surrender to the last part of the Gospel. The Kingdoms of this world will come and go, as will the Kings, Presidents and Leaders. The Reign of God in our world began with the Resurrection of Jesus from the Dead. He lives now among us, and he will come again, on the last day, when all the dead will rise and God’s Kingdom – of peace, joy, forgiveness and trust, freedom and wonder will reign forever “on earth, as it is in Heaven.”

Calling all young people aged 16–35! Join us at the Youth 2000 Summer Festival in Newbridge College, Co. Kildare from August 13th – 16th. This is a donation-only event, with free buses available across the country and all meals included. Expect inspiring talks and workshops, Youth Mass, music, prayer, and plenty of opportunities to chill out and meet other young Catholics. The Annual National Grandparents Pilgrimage celebrating the 6th World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly will take place on Sunday 26th July at Knock Shrine, commencing at 2.30pm with the anointing of the sick.
